Organization of livestock farms in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Case study "Luis Ceballos"
Contenido principal del artículo
Resumen
With the objective of organizing livestock in "Luis Ceballos" system located in the Pastaza canton from Pastaza province in the Ecuadorian Amazon, several tools to diagnose the productive system; create a map of conflicts between the use of soils and their productive capacity and typify the performances of 284
livestock units in the region were integrated. With this information, a panel of experts identified promising alternatives under good agricultural practices and an environmental management system for the ecosystem protection. After organizing the farms and establishing an improved process for the implementation of sustainable productions, sales improved by 67.8 %, the birth rate exceeded 90 % and the weaned weight. cow-1.year-1 reached 160 kg
and the milk yield up to 1318 kg.ha-1.year-1. The conflicts between potential use and current soil use corresponding to 31.4% of the grazing area were eliminated, which mitigates the risks of negative environmental impact to the environment. The organization restricted livestock only the land for grazing. More than 25 % of the lands were dedicated to protective forests, which reduces the degradation risks, predisposes to the recovery of biodiversity and increases the recycling of nutrients in the livestock system. Land organization was implemented following participatory methods of rural innovation to establish each of the processes that are involved
in the methodology proposed in this study.
