Abstract

Three Holstein x Zebu crossbred bulls with average liveweight of 480 kg were used in replicated Latin square design (3 x 3). They were fitted
with cannula in rumen to study the effect of integral and semi-integral rations, based on sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum), on the in situ
functional specific gravity (FSG) and the reduction in ruminal particle size of integral and semi-integral rations. The treatments were: A)
sugarcane forage mixed with molasses urea (2 %) and concentrate in the form of integral diet, B) sugarcane forage mixed with molasses urea
(2 %), and concentrate in feeders twice a day, and C) similar to B), but concentrate once a day. Both treatments were given as semi-integral
diet. At 8 h of incubation, the treatment with all the feeds mixed (integral diet) had increment (P < 0.05) in the gain of FSG, compared with the diets of concentrate separated from the forage (semi-integral), with values of 1.26, 1.16, and 1.12, respectively, for the previously
described treatments. The indicators of the reduction in particle size showed lower (P < 0.05) time for the integral diet, compared with the
semi-integral diet, where the concentrate was supplied twice a day. The results demonstrated that, even with the use of integral or semiintegral
diets, no outstanding responses were attained in the functional specific gravity and the reduction in the ruminal particle size. Further
research is suggested in this respect.
Key words: supplementation frequency, rumen, integral and semi-integral diets.
